How do Solana programs and accounts divide the work?

Solana stores data in accounts and processes instructions through programs. Transaction instructions identify the program and participating accounts.
Begin by asking where data lives, which program may change it and what authorization a call needs. These questions explain an application more usefully than a performance number alone.
Chains differ in account, program and permission models. Shared names such as wallet address or smart contract do not make their data shapes and operation rules interchangeable.
