Why is consensus more than PoW or PoS?
Participation, fork choice and confirmation need separate answers.
Consensus mechanisms help distributed participants agree on acceptable chain state. PoW and PoS are common shorthand, but a complete mechanism also involves validity, fork choice and confirmation rules.
Ask who proposes updates, how many fabricated identities are constrained, how disagreement is resolved and when a result can be relied upon.
These questions compare designs more clearly than ranking chains by an acronym.
