Is IPFS a storage service or a set of protocols?

Imagine sharing a laboratory report through IPFS. Separate four questions: how is the requested content identified, who currently retains it, how can a colleague retrieve it, and who will keep it available next month?

This prevents treating a content address as a complete storage arrangement. Your own node or a chosen service might retain the report; that arrangement needs its own verification.

Use the same distinction when comparing IPFS with a personal data space. Addressing and transferring a report differ from deciding who may read it, which apps may edit it, and how access is revoked. Two systems involving files are not necessarily interchangeable products.

Check your understanding

Does sending a report’s CID to a colleague complete a backup?

No. You still need nodes or services to retain the data and a way to check recovery. An address is not a saved copy.
