Here, personal data space describes an architectural approach: organize data and access around its user, then let applications connect. It does not promise a common protocol across every product.

Imagine travel records used by a journal and a photo app. Separate app databases raise export, conversion and reauthorization questions when switching tools. A shared space raises different questions: which records can be shared, how both apps understand them, and who may edit them.
