How are a display and a session different?

A display presents and accepts interaction; a session groups the operational state associated with an interaction context.

A display is where a person sees an interface and provides input, such as a window on the presenter’s computer. A session is the working context in which the system organizes an interaction, including its pages and associated state. The display is a place of presentation; the session is the context associated with the interaction.

Consider a presenter and an audience member. The audience member may follow the talk or browse earlier pages independently. Following requires both views to observe the intended presentation progress. Independent browsing should not move the presenter’s page.

A network connection carries messages. After an interruption, recovering the old session or creating a new one requires explicit behavior; leaving the window open does not guarantee recovery.

Opening two windows, creating two sessions and sharing presentation progress are distinct actions. Arc implements session and display mechanisms; the audience experience above still needs application configuration and verification.
