One question
What does AFS borrow from Unix?
Common names and operations let tools work across resource implementations.
Start with a tool
One program reads a file; another reads a device. Familiar open, read, write and close interfaces let tools cooperate without rebuilding every interaction for every backend. Unix files, device files and pipes illustrate this approach. They do not make all resource behavior identical.
AFS borrows the direction for an addressable working environment. A task may come from a database, a report from a file, and a notification from an operation with side effects. A common entry point helps discovery and invocation; transactions, document content and message delivery still need their own semantics.
A design influence, not a compatibility claim
“Everything is context” describes an environment an agent can discover and operate on. It does not mean copying everything into a prompt or implementing POSIX. A resource may remain read-only, lack search, or require authorization.
Historical source: Ritchie and Thompson’s The UNIX Time-Sharing System. The connection to AFS is our design interpretation, not a claim made by that paper.
